Accessibility statement
Accessibility, honestly.
We want everyone to be able to use this site. We aim for WCAG 2.2 at level AA, and we claim only what we measure. Here is what we check, what is built in, and what we have not done yet.
Target WCAG 2.2 AA Last reviewed
Measured on every build
Before any change goes live, these checks run on their own. If one fails, the change does not go live.
- Automated tests with axe. They cover WCAG 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 at levels A and AA. They find zero violations on each look of the homepage and on this page, at 1440 and 390 pixels wide.
- Text contrast. Each colour pair we declare for text meets a ratio of 4.5 to 1. Large text, controls and the focus ring meet 3 to 1. This holds in all four looks.
- No sideways scrolling. Pages fit screens down to 320 pixels wide.
- The same without JavaScript. With scripts turned off, pages show the same words and the same links.
- Keyboard access. You can reach the look switch with the keyboard alone.
Built in
- Pause motion. The look switch on every page has a Pause motion button. It stops every animation, every looping picture and every 3D scene.
- Reduced motion. If your device asks for less motion, the site follows that setting, and it reacts the moment you change it.
- A skip link. The first press of the Tab key shows a link that jumps straight to the content.
- Visible focus. The link or button you are on shows a clear outline.
- Decorative 3D. The 3D scenes are decoration, so they are hidden from screen readers.
Not yet done
Automated checks catch a lot, but not everything. These steps are still ahead of us:
- Screen reader testing with people who use a screen reader every day.
- Safari and Firefox. Our browser checks run in Chromium, the engine behind Chrome. We have not tested the site in Safari or Firefox yet.
- A review by people with disabilities, who walk through the site and tell us what gets in their way.
What we store
This site stores nothing on your device unless you press Pause motion. Then it remembers that choice in this browser only, so the pages you open next stay still too.
